Shipper
The shipper or customer needing to transport goods internationally may choose a mixture of transport modes but will mostly depend on the freight forwarder to manage this process.
Manufacturers and distributors employ skilled and knowledgeable transport and distribution experts to liaise with forwarders and customers or end users. The goods must arrive on time and in perfect condition with no difficulties or delays due to incorrect documentation, packaging or misdirection.
Even very heavy machinery such as jet engines, locomotives, cattle and entire orchestras may fly to destinations around the world and will include ancillary services such as refrigeration units, special road services, expert handling and quick decision-making. At the other end of the scale, highly delicate pharmaceutical products, art exhibitions and secret fashion shows, will require discrete and careful supervision. The forwarder is the link but the shipper must be hands on. Job opportunities are varied and carry responsibility and will often require travel to customer destinations.
Some of the responsibilities include:
- Liaising with forwarders to use the most efficient transportation mode.
- Buying & negotiating of services.
- Optimization & digitization modeling.
- Planning of services in close contact with sales.
- Forecasting business models.
