Logistics Service Provider (LSP)
Air cargo consignments frequently travel by truck, both to feed an airport to connect with flights or deliver to customers from incoming flights. Road feeder services are a vital part of the air cargo supply chain. These are offered by logistics service providers which also offer other logistics facilities, like warehousing, last mile distribution, transport in other modalities and digital control towers.
An airline might decide to have a network of full truck loads (FTL) or less than truck load (LTL) or a combination of both. In some areas around the world there are LSP’s that offer an extensive road feeder network covering the whole area. Road feeder networks are mostly deployed in Europe, USA and to a lesser extend Asia. It makes sense to use a truck instead of a flight, because of the dimensions, since short haul flights are operated by smaller planes.
Also, time and cost play a role since not all destinations are at airports. LSP’s offer a wide range of truck services, including for example, secure and cool trailers. Digital platforms & control towers are growing. These companies also increasingly make use of robotization, artificial intelligence and digitization.
